I took a look at the American catalog and noticed there were both dials available for the B1 and there was no mention of why or what was the difference. I guess it is part of the mystique of the brand?! Best guess is they started one way and made a modification.
As for the slide rule, take a look at http://perso.wanadoo.fr/jean-michel/navitimer/index2.htm. there is a link for slide rules which is pretty helpful. It takes a while to master it, but is pretty cool when you figure it out.
